last days of summer

We really relished these last few days of Seattle summer this weekend. It was lovely to get to enjoy this gorgeous blue-sky weather, but I am not really a sun person so I am kind of looking forward to the rain. Ask me how I feel about it in February, but this article called "Ready for Rain" looks promising for me. 

There's still a lot of work to be done inside the house but since the weather on Saturday may have been one of our last sunny days, we decided to devote the afternoon to yard work. David edged and mowed the lawn while I weeded and picked the apples from our tree. The boys went up and down the driveway about a hundred times on their various scooters, bikes and dump trucks while Louisa snoozed for a few hours. It was pretty much perfect. We also met our neighbor across the street, who just happens to be a King Salmon fisherman. Within a few minutes of David talking to him, he handed him a big fillet of some salmon he had just caught. Yes! Sunday dinner is served!

One of the best features of the house we're renting is the outdoor space (which is kind of a shame since we'll only be renting it during the fall/winter while we house hunt) and we've been trying to utilize this deck on the front of the house as much as possible. Sunday dinner is usually (hopefully) with my brother and sister-in-law's family but I wasn't feeling great on Sunday so we decided to stay home and just make a simple supper and go to bed early. With such fresh salmon like this, I just drizzled it with olive oil, salt & pepper and placed some lemon slices on top. Then I broiled it (wrapped in foil) for about 20 minutes and then opened the foil and let it cook another 5 minutes. It was perfectly cooked. I also made a huge bowl of roasted vegetables and grated some fresh Parmesan-Reggiano on top. It doesn't get better than that, folks!
