firsts: favorite spots

William has a few favorite places in our apartment. I usually make sure each spot is unavailable to him because of potential dangers but sometimes he gets past my barricades.
The first, is our patio. While it's not a true danger to him because the railings are too small for him to pass through, it still makes me nervous. His favorite thing to do is stand at this spot and yell/babble. For the last few days he's been especially interested in this activity and I couldn't figure out why. Then today, I went outside and realized there was a little girl about his age on the patio next to us and they were "talking" to each other. Her mom and I had a chat and we talked about starting a play group for our building. This is just a small testament to his social personality.
His next favorite area is the refrigerator. If you haven't already guessed, I like to cook (and eat) so the refrigerator door is opened and closed a lot throughout the day. But this boy of mine is like one of Pavlov's dogs. He comes running (more like, crawling rapidly) as soon as he hears the suction of the door coming open. Sometimes he pulls all the condiments off the shelves and other times he opens the drawers and gnaws on a few packets of Laughing Cow cheese and then discards the foil wrapper behind the cabinets. The best part though is listening to the squeals he makes while rummaging through the contents of our refrigerator. It's as if he's thrilled to find them all over again!
please don't lecture about the open can danger. my husband already did.
The last, and worst, favorite place of this little black-smeared face is the garbage can. Now that he's learned to open the cupboards, I have to watch him extra carefully. He usually doesn't get far enough into the cupboards without me seeing in order for him to reach the contents of the garbage but that's the first thing he goes for. I went to the bathroom for seriously two seconds and came back to find him digging the last few black beans out of the can along with a few clementine peels. And yes, I took a picture of it before I took away the sharp can. I'm an awesome mom.

On another note, he took a couple of steps today on his own without falling down! This boy keeps me on my toes! Any other potential favorite spots around the house I should watch out for?

  1. What, he hasn't found the toilet yet? Well, he will, and soon.

  2. Oh, the trashcan! I hated the trashcan. I forgot all about it until I read this.

  3. I second the toilet. It is my 18-month-old's favorite spot to splash for a minute. He also is now tall enough to open the kitchen drawers and fish around in there. Yikes! Luckily, I have moved all the sharp things out of reach but that doesn't stop him from grabbing a metal ladle to bang on my hardwood floors. Oh the joys.

  4. Cute, cute boy! I was gonna mention that bag of flour in the background of that pic. Flour is a MESS to clean up! I think it's great he found the black beans before he found the flour.

  5. One of our kiddos LOVED the trashcan. We realized (after the fact, of course) that the trash must have been where lots of missing items ended up - like a nice shoe, many sippy cups, and many many toys.

You'd think after five kids I'd have thought to make sure the trash was secure. Oh well. ;)

  6. He is too cute! I can see how he loves to be on the balcony. What fun! I was just telling my husband last night that our daughter is like the Pavlov dog too. We keep most her her snacks (fruit bars, godldfish, graham crackers etc.) in a glass jar on our counter. As soon as she hears it open she comes over so quick. Her ears and brain are trained to listen for the sound of that jar being opened. She knows that something yummy is in there!

I'd say that every month brings on a new thing for them to get into, and some fade (thankfully). She was into the fridge a lot at Williams age but isn't so much anymore. She has now discovered how to open her dresser doors and has a ton of fun pulling all of her clothes out, and throwing them all over her floor! She normally puts them back though, but they are no longer folded!

  7. He is so cute! That darn trash can though... uuugh! Parker loves getting into the trash can and throwing things away (like parts to my juicer or tupperware!) :) It's so cute how curious they are right now! I don't think they're trying to be naughty, they just want to figure stuff out! Cute post. :)

  8. I have a 16 month old, and just a trick I've learned from having a baby who also loves the fridge and comes running to it whenever it's opened--instead of telling him "no" (this goes for other doors, cupboards, drawers you don't want him opening), just excitedly ask him "can you close the door?!?" Maybe it doesn't work for all kids, but it definitely does for mine, and it gives him a sense of accomplishment once he closes it. I was surprised that it actually works! Your son is adorable by the way!

  9. Your son is the cutest thing I have ever seen. I have been lurking around and reading all your past blogs starting with your adachef blog (which I got linked to from a recipe blog). So I am delurking to say "AWwww!" That face! Those eyes! Too much! YOu know how they say all moms think their baby is the cutest...well you may be right... ;)

  10. Oh, what fun! I had a son who would grab cabbage out of the fridge and toss it yelling, "Ball!, Ball!" Another potential fun spot is the toilet and toilet paper!! William is adorable and I love your posts!
