nursery: step one

finding a nursery mobile is hard work. well, it’s hard work if you want one that isn’t covered in a scrunchie with hanging disney characters. don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of adorable mobiles out there from modern wood to handmade birds. alas those price tags are a tad high for me so I hopped on etsy, scoped around for something that was more up my alley and came across this cute shop. I was very close to buying this adorable pinwheel mobile when I thought, “heck, I can do this and save $50 for something else I can’t make!” (and I wanted to use my own paper.)
turns out I can make it . . . but it also turns out that I would kill myself for two weeks trying to get mine to look as perfect, symmetrical and pretty as hers. I didn’t entirely succeed as far as symmetry goes but david and I both agree that the off-balance-ness is kind of cool. plus, I love how the pinwheels spin in the wind that blows through the nursery window. this is one small step in the direction of our nursery. so far we’re almost done. I just need a crib mattress, some wall shelves, frames and a few other knick knacks. in fact, now I’m on the hunt for the perfect baby book. any ideas where I can get something as cool as the binth one (boo to $110)?
p.s. if you’re decorating your nursery, check out these websites for inspiration:
and I like to peruse serena & lily (sigh) every now and again just to drool. though e-bay has been particularly good to me lately . . .

  1. Not quite sure how I found your blog, but I love this post, because this is the EXACT issue that I've been dealing with lately. I'm expecting my first baby in October and I'm extremely picky when it comes to nursery decor.
Last Saturday I decided that since I hate nearly all mobiles (for the same reasons you mentioned, plus the obnoxious music you hear when you wind them up) I was going to make a pinwheel mobile myself. I choose the colors and patterns- it will be wonderful. Great minds think alike, right?

Good luck with your pinwheel mobile making- be sure to post a picture of the finished product!

  2. I love your mobile and the ones which were your inspiration.

The baby book is adorable but I agree it's a bit pricey. Keep searching!

  4. I love your mobile - it's beautiful. And your comment about in-store mobiles being, for the most part, scrunchy-covered, is so true. And so funny!

  5. I LOVE your pinwheel mobile. I decided early in my pregnancy (I'm 5 months now) that I was going to have to make my own because there typical ones just don't work for me. This is something I'm definitely going to have to consider.

As for baby books, I LOVE this one: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29512020. It's not super cheap, but it's exactly what I was looking for, so maybe you'll like it, too.

  9. My blurb baby book turned out perfect--because I designed it exactly how I wanted it. 200 pages with over 300 images, hard cover, full color print, and it was about $50
